HydroMassage Circuit Board

This is one version of dozens of circuit board maps used for repair, troubleshooting, and training.

It’s a combination of Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator vectors, carefully layered to repurpose according to whatever usage or repair system it would be used in. Harnesses, wires, and board hardware could be added and subtracted for maximum context.

This is a classic example of a management directive to fit four pages of information on two pages of communication real estate. The compromise was a smaller font than I’d have liked and a reduced footprint for important graphics. But somehow it all worked out.

Anheuser-Busch Marketing Application Development

This is a logo I was asked to design by the management of A-B’s Management System Group for a spinoff division that was momentarily on the drawing board.

For a brief period on the early 2000s, Anheuser-Busch considered a merger of the Management Systems Group with another Sales Engineering group. I was asked my MSG management to mockup a logo and design materials.

This is a perfect example of why you don’t want programmers branding your applications. The original name on this prehistoric Electronic Commerce program from the BudNET team at A-B was “A-B Wholesaler Electronic Commerce Alternative Initiative.”


After I stopped facepalming, I rebranded the application “EasyKey EC” and designed this logo.

The Marketing Team at Aclara usually handled product cutsheets, but this redesign of the format trickled down to my desk when they were booked and a tradeshow loomed.

bioMérieux Visual Documentation Format

This is one of the projects of which I am most proud. An engineer at bioMérieux pharmaceutical machines realized that they’d have fewer defective products, rework, and recalls if the documentation used by the lineworkers was less “milspec” and more “comic book.”

I helped define the format and make it happen, despite a fine line that had to be walked to satisfy FDA requirements. By pushing all of the legacy milspec into the right column of an 11 x 17 page and illustrating every step in the process with photographs enhanced by graphic motion overlays, the documentation was better assimilated by different kinds of adult learners. The “readers” could just follow the directives on the right. The visual learners could better follow a combination of text and photographs. Tactile learners could follow the instructions while holding a defunct sample part as they worked through the documentation.

This is a classic example of “What the client described” [top left], “What I thought the client needed” [top right], and “What the client really wanted” [bottom].

This is a rebranding campaign for a psychiatric hospital that I worked on with my wife — a Marketing Manager — after it was acquired in a merger by her hospital.

I loved the lighthouse design, but in the end the customer decided it was more important to go with the first logo, as it most closely matched their current branding.

Book Covers

As an aspiring author, it helps to brand your own manuscripts with some fake book covers that become marketing iconography. Or at least I managed to avoid writing for a couple hours while I deluded myself into pretending it would help.

Vitek2 Reactive Chemical Card and Tube

This is the bread-and-butter core product of bioMérieux, the Vitek card. The plastic tube samples either a vial of blood or saliva and a suction process draws that blood into each of the 64 chambers where it reacts (or doesn’t react) to a battery of test chemicals.

The detail of the capillary system was probably overkill, but it sure looked great wherever I used it as an illustration in the documentation. I kept layer control over the vectored file so I could strip away the chemicals, the tube, or the shell of clear tape to match the Vitek card illustration to its station in the manufacturing process.
